Basewide Groundwater Monitoring, Former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, CA

Since 2016, Trevet has conducted semiannual groundwater gauging and sampling, quarterly post remedial action (RA) performance monitoring, semiannual sampling for radionuclides in groundwater, and a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) investigation for over 40 former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (HPNS) Installation Restoration (IR) Program sites. Support within 10 of the 12 contiguous HPNS parcels also includes monitoring well installation, development, rehabilitation, and decommissioning, and other groundwater related activities.

The basewide groundwater monitoring program addresses specific site conditions and contaminants of concern and regulatory compliance issues. This highly complex, dynamic program evolves continuously as field and analytical data are evaluated semiannually. Unique sampling programs and chemical analyte lists requiring oversight and coordination have been developed for each IR Program site. GW samples are collected semiannually from over 175 monitoring wells and semiannual gauging activities are conducted at over 250 wells.

Monitoring program activities and data are summarized in semiannual groundwater monitoring reports and technical memorandums. The nature and extent of contamination in each plume are updated and analytical data are evaluated against remedial goals and RA objectives in parcel specific records of decision and monitoring programs, identifying conditions requiring action. Technical memorandums were also prepared for a PFAS investigation, an optimization study, well installation and repair activities, and a parcel specific statistical analytical data evaluation following RA activities in 2022 and 2023.

“The team has provided … technical support, superb organizational skills, and knowledge of past and current reports/events, to address both Navy and regulatory concerns. The Project is staffed with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to execute the contract … management of quality control, technical expertise, as well as the quality of the work itself, were apparent in the coordination of reports with project specifications and regulatory compliance.” – NAVFAC Southwest
