Landfill Monitoring, Inspections, and Remediation, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA

Trevet has conducted since 2018 post-record of decision (ROD) monitoring, inspections, and maintenance at the Box Canyon landfill, and compliance monitoring at the Las Pulgas and San Onofre landfills. Box Canyon Landfill is a closed hazardous waste landfill investigated and monitored under both CERCLA and RCRA programs, and Las Pulgas and San Onfre landfills are open, active landfills.

At Installation Restoration Site 7, the Box Canyon Landfill, Trevet operates and maintains a landfill gas (LFG) mitigation system; performs annual groundwater sampling and reporting; and conducts monthly landfill field inspections and LFG compliance monitoring in accordance with the ROD and the post-closure monitoring and maintenance plan. The mitigation system was designed by Trevet to address LFG migration following the capping of the landfill and consists of multiple LFG extraction wells equipped with solar powered vent flares that extract and combust gas emitted from the landfill. Methane concentrations in perimeter LFG wells have been reduced by up to 90%, reversing the LFG gradient.

Long-Term Groundwater and Landfill Gas Monitoring, Post-ROD Inspections, and Landfill Gas Remediation at Box Canyon, Las Pulgas, and San Onofre Landfills, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA

Compliance monitoring at the Las Pulgas and San Onofre landfills included groundwater sampling, surface water testing and analysis, leachate testing and analysis, landfill inspections, and LFG perimeter methane and surface emissions monitoring. Results from semiannual groundwater sampling were used to assess volatile organic compound and other contaminant concentrations, identify any releases from the landfill, and evaluate corrective action measures effectiveness. Quarterly water level gauging data was used to assess seasonal groundwater flow direction and gradient.

“Trevet serves as the prime contractor for the... landfill gas system at Box Canyon… [and] has provided exceptional oversight of the sub to include coordinating meetings and fieldwork with NAVFAC, ROICC, and Camp Pendleton E/S…. work has been on-time and in-budget while providing a system that is addressing landfill gas better than expected.” – NAVFAC Southwest
